"Destroy" as in "Ruin" as in "Forget about ever playing this again, even if it's yours!"
Spectcaular versions of this song existed long before our boys got a hold of it. Duke Ellington wrote it. Billie Holiday sang it. So did Ella Fitzgerald. You know the type.
I wouldn't have touched this with a 20-foot pole, even with the best band I ever had. No prob for the Rumour. They not only took it on but they destroyed it in the most merciless and non-violent fashion!
And now this beautiful old song has been ruined forever, in the same way that Van Halen ruined "You Really Got Me". Even The Kinks could never play that one again ... without reminding the whole world ... that they didn't have anybody in their band who was half as good as Eddie. Or Alex. Or Michael. RIP Eddie. Sob. And sorry about this, Dave, but Ray Davies kicks your ass. ;-)
But this is not about Van Halen. It's about The Rumour -- best known for supporting Graham Parker but awesome on their own, as demonstrated here.
Steven Goulding is the drummer. Andrew Bodnar plays bass. They're an amazing rhythm section: Tight, fast, powerful, and they swing, too! And Bodnar dances as he plays. As a bass player, he's one of my most important "role models." Maybe someday I'll tell you why -- or you could just listen to this track and figure it out for yourself. We'll hear more from Andrew Bodnar later, God willing.
Meanwhile: Brinsley Shwartz plays guitar. So does Martin Belmont. Bob Andrews plays keyboards. They're all excellent players. And everybody in the band can sing! The lead vocal on this track sounds like Brinsley to me but I don't know for sure.
I do know that they're joined here by their occasional and brilliant horn section of Albie Donnelly on tenor sax, Bob Roberson on alto sax, Dick Hanson on trumpet and Danny Ellis on trombone.
I bet you can't listen to this track just once ... or just twice!
Do nothing till you hear from meYeah! You're welcome. I am humbled and thrilled to share this with you.
Pay no attention to what's said
Why one should tear the seam of anyone's dream
Is over my head
Do nothing till you hear from me
At least consider our romance
If you should take the word of others you've heard
I haven't a chance
True, I've been seen with someone new
But does that mean that I'm untrue?
While we're apart, the words in my heart
Reveal how I feel about you
Some kiss may cloud my memory
And other arms may hold a thrill
But please do nothing till you hear it from me
And you never will!
